New Carlos Canseco Park Opens in Cozumel After Community Makeover

Cozumel, Mexico — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and Cozumel Mayor José Luis Chacón formally delivered the fully reconstructed "Carlos Canseco" Park to the public, a project designed with direct input from local residents. Located in the heart of the San Miguel I neighborhood, the park marks a significant revitalization effort after decades of neglect.

A Collaborative Effort for Community Revitalization

The reconstruction, funded with 7.9 million pesos from the Environmental Sanitation Fund, involved demolishing the previous structure, which had been abandoned for nearly 40 years. Governor Lezama emphasized the importance of community participation in the project, stating, "It was the neighbors, the voice of the people, who decided, designed, and participated."

She further highlighted the broader impact of the initiative: "Recovering a park isn’t just about improving a physical space—it’s about fostering well-being, building community, and creating opportunities for family integration, which is fundamental to our strategy for peacebuilding."

Modern Amenities for Public Enjoyment

Mayor José Luis Chacón detailed the park’s previous state as "deteriorated, unused, and unsafe for children and families." The renovated space now features:

"This was done hand in hand with the people of Cozumel, the residents of this neighborhood, who now have a dignified and high-quality space," Chacón said.

Governor Lezama framed the project as part of the broader "New Agreement for the Wellbeing and Development of Quintana Roo," emphasizing a grassroots approach to governance. "This is possible because this administration fights corruption—when corruption is tackled, funds go further," she asserted.

She reiterated the administration’s dedication to inclusive, humanist policies, describing the government as "feminist at its core," and called for continued collaboration to drive further transformation.
