Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — A gas explosion and a house fire in separate incidents across northern Quintana Roo injured seven people on Monday and Tuesday, including an infant who required an emergency airlift to Mexico City for specialized burn treatment.
The first incident occurred Monday morning around 9:00 a.m. on Isla Mujeres, a resort island off the coast. A gas leak at a home on the corner of Isla Contoy and Corvina streets in the La Gloria neighborhood triggered a powerful explosion. Preliminary reports suggest a family member ignited a stove without detecting the leak.
The blast injured five people inside the home. Authorities initially transported three victims—two women and a 1-year-6-month-old baby boy named Jesús—to the Isla Mujeres Community Hospital. They later transferred them to the Jesús Kumate Rodríguez General Hospital in Cancún for more advanced care.
Due to the severity of his injuries, which included second-degree burns covering 20% of his body on his chest, abdomen, neck, and arms, the infant was airlifted Tuesday to the National Center for Burn Research and Care (CENIAQ) in Mexico City. The Quintana Roo State Health Department and IMSS-Bienestar coordinated the medical evacuation.
Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama announced the transfer on social media, stating, “Today we managed to save the life of Jesús.”
Playa del Carmen Fire
In a separate incident Tuesday, a house fire in the Misión de las Flores neighborhood of Playa del Carmen, near Lilis Avenue, trapped two men inside. Neighbors heard their cries for help, broke through part of the structure to rescue them, and rushed them to a hospital. One man sustained serious injuries.
Firefighters from Playa del Carmen arrived later and extinguished the blaze, but the property suffered significant damage.
The back-to-back emergencies in northern Quintana Roo resulted in a total of seven people injured across the two municipalities.
