Chetumal, Quintana Roo — With a positive response from citizens, free public transportation began every Sunday on “Tu Ruta Chetumal” starting January 18, an initiative driven by the Government of the State of Quintana Roo, led by Governor Mara Lezama, which places people’s well-being and the right to accessible mobility at the center.
The director of Imoveqroo, Rafael Hernández Kotasek, explained that this benefit applies on three strategic routes: Caribe, Sian Kaan–Las Américas, and Calzada Veracruz, which operate during their regular hours from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., allowing safe, comfortable, and cost-free trips on Sundays so families can socialize, enjoy the city, and access services, public spaces, and recreational activities.
From Monday to Saturday, the “Tu Ruta Chetumal” service maintains its regular operation with a fare of 15 pesos, while on Sundays, starting now, the service is completely free, reaffirming that public transportation is promoted as a social right and not a privilege, especially for those who need it most.
This action represents a measure of social justice that directly supports family economies, as a family can save up to 200 pesos each Sunday just on transportation, resources that can be allocated to local consumption, recreation, and community interaction, thereby strengthening the city’s economy.
In addition to social and economic benefits, he indicated that free Sunday transportation contributes to a more orderly and sustainable city by reducing the use of private cars.
From a financial perspective, it is a responsible and sustainable measure, as on Sundays the demand for urban public transportation can decrease by up to 70%, allowing the free service to be offered without compromising the system’s stability. This scheme has already been successfully implemented in cities in countries such as Brazil, France, and Spain, where it has demonstrated positive impacts on mobility and social cohesion.
With this initiative, the State Government, through Imoveqroo, consolidates a mobility policy with a humanistic focus, which brings transportation closer to people and guarantees free transit to parks, hospitals, markets, cultural activities, sports centers, and public spaces, strengthening the right to the city.
The routes allow free connection to various points of interest in Chetumal, including:
