Cozumel, Mexico — The Foundation of Parks and Museums of Cozumel (FPMC) has facilitated a genetic research study on bat populations in collaboration with the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN). The project, conducted at the Center for Conservation and Environmental Education (CCEA), aims to provide critical insights into the evolutionary history of these mammals and develop effective conservation strategies.
Strengthening Scientific and Conservation Efforts
FPMC Director General Juanita Alonso Marrufo emphasized the institution’s commitment to fostering partnerships with academic and research organizations. These alliances align with the New Agreement for Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, to enhance community welfare and ecosystem health.
Rafael Chacón Díaz, Director of Conservation and Environmental Education, detailed that the research was led by Jorge Eduardo Alemán Silva, a Master of Science from IPN’s Laboratory of Bioconservation and Management. Alemán Silva is spearheading the project Population Genetics of Mexican Bats, which seeks to understand genetic diversity and inform conservation approaches.
Fieldwork and Ethical Practices
During their stay at the CCEA, researchers installed mist nets under FPMC-approved permits to temporarily capture bat specimens. The animals were later released unharmed, ensuring their well-being throughout the study.
Chacón Díaz highlighted the significance of such research in advancing scientific knowledge about bat biodiversity and genetic structure. The findings are expected to strengthen collaboration between scientific research and conservation efforts, reinforcing FPMC’s role in protecting local ecosystems.
A Commitment to Biodiversity Protection
The FPMC continues to serve as a strategic partner in generating knowledge for biodiversity conservation. This initiative underscores the organization’s dedication to preserving Cozumel’s natural heritage through science-based solutions.
