A small yacht was engulfed by flames on Wednesday, November 13, in the Nichupté Mangrove Flora and Fauna Protected Area, near Cancun's Calinda bridge. This incident marks the fourth yacht fire this year in the Nichupté Lagoon System.
A man was aboard the yacht when the fire broke out. He attempted to put out the flames, but the fire rapidly spread across the vessel. He was forced to jump into the water and was subsequently rescued by a nearby boat. Fortunately, he did not suffer any serious injuries.
The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit in the yacht's engine. The sight of the smoke and the subsequent social media reaction prompted a quick response from local security, rescue teams, and firefighters.
The authorities were alerted to the incident via an emergency 911 call and acted swiftly to bring the situation under control. The Tourist Police and the Heroic Fire Department of the hotel zone were among the first responders on the scene. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The fire occurred near a protected mangrove area, raising concerns about potential harm to the local marine ecosystem. While it has not been officially confirmed, it is believed that the yacht was completely destroyed in the fire.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident and are assessing the extent of the material and environmental damages. Specialized experts have been brought in to assist with this process.
