Mérida, Yucatán — As the 2025 Atlantic and Pacific hurricane seasons approach, the National Civil Protection Meeting was held to discuss necessary measures to address these natural phenomena. The meeting, taking place from May 7 to 9 at the Yucatán Siglo XXI Convention Center, brought together officials and representatives from Civil Protection agencies across all 32 Mexican states.

Hurricane Season Forecast

The hurricane season in the Pacific Ocean begins on May 15, while the Atlantic season starts on June 1. Fabián Vázquez Romaña, head of Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN), provided projections for the 2025 season.

In the Pacific, between 16 and 20 tropical cyclones are expected, with 13 to 17 forecast for the Atlantic. Of these, four to six Pacific hurricanes could reach Category 3, 4, or 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Additionally, four or five may reach Category 1 or 2, while eight or nine could develop as tropical storms.

For the Atlantic, three or four systems are predicted to reach the highest intensity (Category 3, 4, or 5), with three or four more likely to be Category 1 or 2. Seven to nine storms are expected to remain at tropical storm strength.

Preparedness Measures

Key discussions at the meeting included the development of over 3,300 specialized Civil Protection programs in coordination with state and municipal authorities. These programs aim to strengthen local prevention, preparedness, and response efforts.

The National Disaster Prevention Center (Cenapred) has conducted 296 training courses to certify members of the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc). Additionally, the event highlighted the role of Liaison and Coordination Missions (ECO), which enhance preparedness and ensure proper communication between federal entities, the private sector, and civil society.

Officials urged the public to stay informed through official channels as the hurricane season approaches. The meeting emphasized the importance of preventive measures, training, and coordinated response efforts to mitigate risks posed by these natural events.
