Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Four men have been formally charged with aggravated extortion in Playa del Carmen after judges found sufficient evidence against them in separate hearings, the State Prosecutor’s Office confirmed.
All four defendants will remain in preventive detention while the judicial process continues, officials announced.
Taqueria Extortion Case
In the first case, Luis Ángel “N,” Víctor Manuel “N,” and Rafael “N” face charges for allegedly entering a taqueria on Avenida Solidaridad between Calle Tulum and Avenida Misión del Carmen on January 31. According to the investigation, they demanded the owner pay 10,000 pesos monthly as “protection money,” identifying themselves as members of a criminal group and threatening to kill him and burn the establishment if he refused.
The victim filed a complaint, leading to an investigation by the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Kidnapping and Extortion. After reviewing the evidence, a judge ordered the men to stand trial and remain in preventive detention.
WhatsApp Threats Case
In a separate case, Jorge Luis “N” was charged for allegedly sending WhatsApp messages to his neighbor on January 28 demanding 2,000 pesos and threatening to harm the neighbor’s family if he didn’t pay. The complaint states that days later, the suspect went to the victim’s home demanding 5,000 pesos, warning that he knew the movements of the victim’s family members.
After an arrest warrant was executed, he was brought before a judge who ordered him to stand trial and imposed preventive detention as a precautionary measure.
Related Arrests in Benito Juárez
The Prosecutor’s Office also reported that as part of ongoing extortion investigations, arrest warrants were executed in Benito Juárez municipality against Carlos Daniel “N” and Erwin David “N.” They are accused of arriving on a motorcycle at a food business on Avenida Kabah with Ruta 4 on January 27, demanding “protection money” while claiming to belong to a criminal group.
Authorities stated that in all four Playa del Carmen cases, sufficient evidence was presented for judges to order the defendants to stand trial for aggravated extortion against victims whose identities are protected.
