Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Mario Ernesto Villanueva Madrid, the 76-year-old former governor of Quintana Roo, remains hospitalized in critical condition at the ISSSTE Hospital in Chetumal. He was admitted on the morning of May 14, 2025, and is currently under intensive medical supervision in bed 18 of the Internal Medicine department’s critical care unit.
Serious Medical Complications
According to the hospitalization report issued by ISSSTE, Villanueva Madrid has been diagnosed with exacerbated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), left pleural effusion, hypothyroidism, and heart failure. His condition is described as delicate, with no definitive discharge date until his treating physician determines further progress.
Sources close to the family had previously indicated that the former governor suffered a suspected heart attack and respiratory complications due to fluid accumulation in one of his lungs, consistent with the pleural effusion diagnosis. These acute conditions compound the chronic health issues Villanueva Madrid has faced in recent years, which reportedly stem from his time in prison and have significantly weakened his physical state.
Community Awaits Updates
The community, along with friends and supporters of the former governor, continues to monitor updates on his medical progress. No additional statements have been released by hospital authorities or family representatives at this time.
