TULUM, Mexico — A second meeting between authorities from three levels of government and representatives of the "Playas Libres" (Free Beaches) movement has resulted in a significant development: the formal submission of a request to the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) to enable a public access point in the northern zone of the Jaguar Park.

The new pathway, located next to the artisans' area and near the Jaguar Park, is considered strategic for guaranteeing the free and safe entry of residents and visitors. The document was officially received by both federal agencies and must now be analyzed based on legal and technical criteria.

The municipal secretary general, Johny Monsreal, reported that an initial response from the federal authorities is expected within a period of 20 days. In the meantime, it was agreed that working groups will be held with artisans, service providers, and local merchants to address additional issues that accompany this citizen demand.

Mayor Diego Castañón also reaffirmed his commitment and announced that starting next week, a municipal official will be assigned to the southern access point of the city. This official will be tasked with monitoring compliance with free access to the beaches and following up on any potential irregularities.

For his part, the spokesperson for the movement, Andrés Garibay, reiterated that this struggle is not driven by partisan interests, but by the constitutional right of all Mexicans to access the beaches. He stated that the goal is to achieve judicial recognition of the "easement of passage," a legal figure that has historically guaranteed transit to the coastal zone.

The request opens a 30-business-day period for the agencies to respond. With this step, both the government and civil society agreed that a new stage of collaboration has begun to guarantee the public's enjoyment of Tulum's beaches.
