Cancún, Mexico — Food tourism in downtown Cancún has surged by up to 30%, driven by three culinary programs involving more than 10 Mexican restaurants in the city center. The initiative aims to revitalize the area, particularly along Yaxchilán and Nader avenues, with an average economic impact of $120 per tourist.

European Tourists Lead Demand for Authentic Cuisine

Contrary to trends in Cancún’s hotel zone, 40% of participants in these food-focused tours are European visitors seeking an authentic taste of Mexican cuisine. Luis García Jurado, director of the company Food Travel, noted the growing interest in traditional dishes.

“This venture began in 2019 and has gradually expanded, now serving 1,000 people monthly during peak seasons and around 600 during slower periods,” García Jurado explained.

Three Unique Gastronomic Experiences

The programs offer distinct culinary activities tailored to tourists’ interests:

  1. Lucha Libre with Dinner: A combination of wrestling entertainment and a Mexican meal.
  2. Food Tour: A guided exploration of multiple eateries to sample regional dishes.
  3. Cooking Class: Hands-on instruction with a chef to prepare iconic dishes like mole.

Prices range from $80 to $120 per experience.

Economic Boost for Local Restaurants

The initiative has increased restaurant occupancy by 30%, introducing international visitors to staples such as tacos al pastor, carnitas, tripe, suadero, tamales, birria, mondongo, quesabirrias, empanadas, and quesadillas.

Participating restaurants are encouraged to create special menus that cater to tourist preferences while highlighting Mexico’s seasonal traditions. García Jurado emphasized the importance of drawing beachgoers from Cancún and Playa del Carmen to downtown eateries, offering them a unique cultural and economic experience.
