Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Police arrested five people after a brawl broke out in this resort city following Argentina’s loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
The fight erupted on a central street after the match, when some Mexican and other fans allegedly taunted Argentine supporters about their team’s defeat, angering those who had backed the Albiceleste until the final whistle.
Tourist police officers responded to a report of a disturbance at Calle 6 and Avenida, where they found several people fighting. According to an unconfirmed account, the altercation began when Mexican fans on a motorcycle mocked Argentine fans.
Municipal police detained five people — two men and three women. Four were Mexican and one was Argentine. Some witnesses claimed more people were involved in the fight.
Authorities deployed a security operation to protect Argentine fans who remained in the city center after the match. No further incidents were reported.
A similar incident occurred in Mexico City, where three Argentine fans allegedly attacked people celebrating Spain’s victory. Security guards at a shopping center intervened before the situation escalated.
