Cancun, Quintana Roo — The Planetario Ka’Yok’ in Cancun is set to undergo its most significant transformation since opening, with a 54.7 million peso ($2.9 million) investment to turn it into a modern hub for science education and interactive learning.
Of the total budget, 14.5 million pesos will go toward public works, while 40.2 million pesos will fund new museum exhibits, technology, and immersive experiences. The renovation covers more than 1,100 square meters, offering visitors a journey through the history of the universe, the evolution of life on Earth, and hands-on educational activities.
A centerpiece of the upgrade is the digital dome, which will be equipped with the Digistar 26 system, one of the most advanced in the world. Features include three 4K laser projectors, surround sound, and realistic projections. The dome will also connect with planetariums in Mexico and abroad to expand educational programming.
The new concept emphasizes STEAM learning — science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics — through dynamic experiences. The museum layout will take visitors on a chronological tour of the cosmos, covering the origin of the universe, Earth’s formation, the evolution of life, the age of dinosaurs, and modern scientific discoveries.
Prehistoric Patio With 14 Giant Dinosaurs
As part of the renovation, the planetarium will add a Prehistoric Patio, an outdoor exhibit featuring 14 giant dinosaur replicas in a themed setting. The space aims to spark interest in paleontology and natural sciences among children and young people.
Maker Space and Family-Friendly Upgrades
The project also includes a Maker Space — a modern laboratory where students and visitors can develop scientific, technological, and creative projects. Other areas to be remodeled include the auditorium, classrooms, restrooms, accessible entrances, a cafeteria, and an official souvenir shop.
With this transformation, the Planetario Ka’Yok’ aims to become one of the leading science and technology centers in southeastern Mexico, bringing innovation to new generations through interactive, world-class experiences.
