Costa Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Authorities arrested five men in the mainland area of Isla Mujeres for allegedly extorting a tourist service provider on Costa Mujeres beach.
The State Prosecutor’s Office announced that the operation involved the Investigation Police in coordination with the State Citizen Security Department, with support from the Mexican Army and Navy.
Among those detained is José Alfredo “N,” identified as the person collecting “protection money” payments. Also arrested were Jorge “N” and Antonio “N,” security guards at a hotel near the victim’s business, along with Margarito “N” and Guillermo “N,” who worked as lifeguards at the same lodging facility.
Initial investigations indicate the four employees facilitated the alleged extortionist’s criminal activities.
The case began after the victim filed a complaint, stating he had been forced to pay weekly fees since August 2023.
In November 2025, José Alfredo “N” returned to the establishment to demand $350 weekly, claiming to belong to a “violent criminal group” (drug cartel cell) and stating he was now in charge of collections in the area.
At the time of his arrest, authorities seized $450 in cash, two cell phones, and several bags of dried vegetation resembling marijuana, along with other evidence.
The five detainees were handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which will determine their legal status within the corresponding legal timeframe.
