Bacalar, Quintana Roo — With steady winds and strong athletic participation, the Bacalar Nautical Club successfully hosted the opening stage of the “Copa Azur” regatta circuit on February 14 and 15 at the iconic Bacalar Lagoon.
Over the two-day event, athletes, coaches, families, and spectators gathered along the lagoon’s shoreline for a weekend of competitive sailing under near-ideal weather conditions. Consistent winds allowed for smooth race execution and elevated the overall level of competition, setting a strong tone for the circuit’s inaugural stage.
Sailors from multiple municipalities across Quintana Roo participated, drawing a notable local audience and reinforcing Bacalar’s growing reputation as a hub for high-level nautical sports. Organizers say the turnout highlights the lagoon’s potential as a host venue for state and national regattas.
Competition focused on the Hobie Cat and Windsurf classes, both considered key disciplines in preparation for the upcoming CONADE National Games, scheduled for May in Yucatán. For many young competitors, the regatta served as an important training benchmark as they aim to represent Quintana Roo at the national level.
Event organizers emphasized that the regatta was conducted under strict adherence to official sailing race rules, safety protocols, and environmental protections for the lagoon’s fragile ecosystem, ensuring a fair and responsible competition.
The organizing committee extended thanks to participating athletes, sponsors, media representatives, local authorities, and the community whose support contributed to the event’s success.
With a strong start, the “Copa Azur” circuit positions itself as an important platform for advancing youth sailing in Quintana Roo while strengthening Bacalar’s role in the state’s sporting calendar.
