Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire at an improvised shelter used by homeless individuals in the El Pedregal neighborhood on Friday afternoon, with authorities confirming no injuries.
The blaze consumed a mattress and a palapa-style structure built with lightweight materials at the intersection of Avenida 75 and Avenida 38, prompting an immediate emergency response. Firefighters controlled the fire within minutes, preventing flames from spreading to nearby properties or parked vehicles.
This marks the second similar incident in the area this month, where makeshift shelters constructed from wood, cardboard, plastics, and other highly flammable materials occasionally appear. Local residents have raised concerns about the constant risk posed by such encampments, particularly due to the use of open fires or irregular electrical setups for cooking and lighting at night.
Officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire, but they have not ruled out the possibility of an improperly extinguished campfire or negligence. The area was cordoned off as a precaution while firefighters conducted cooling operations to prevent reignition. Public security personnel also arrived at the scene to assess the situation and rule out additional risks.
