Cancun — A high-intensity fire broke out on the morning of Thursday, October 2, in an abandoned property located in Supermanzana 69 on José López Portillo Avenue. The incident prompted a large-scale mobilization of emergency services and caused alarm among local residents and motorists.
The building, which previously operated as an events hall, has been repeatedly occupied by individuals experiencing homelessness, who are known to light campfires or burn trash on the premises. According to testimonies from neighbors, at least ten similar fires have been reported at the same location over the last few years, without definitive intervention from the authorities.
In this latest incident, the fire consumed a large quantity of accumulated objects. No injuries were reported, as the unhoused individuals who had been staying at the site managed to flee before the arrival of the Fire Department, Civil Protection, Red Cross paramedics, and Municipal Police.
Firefighting efforts to control the blaze lasted for several minutes and necessitated a partial closure of traffic on López Portillo Avenue, causing congestion in the affected stretch. The exact cause of the fire has not been officially confirmed.
Confronted with the constant recurrence of these events, residents and local business owners announced they will begin collecting signatures to demand that authorities clean, secure, and permanently close the property, which they consider a persistent security risk and danger to the community.
