Teen Defends Stepmom in Fatal Playa del Carmen Incident

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Attorney General’s Office of Quintana Roo (FGE) has dismissed the classification of parricide in the case of a minor involved in the fatal stabbing of his father on July 20 in the Paseos de Xcacel neighborhood. State Attorney General Raciel López Salazar clarified that the incident resulted from an act of self-defense by the adolescent, who intervened to protect his stepmother from physical abuse.

Minor Acted in Legitimate Defense

During a press conference, López Salazar stated, "This is not a case of parricide—that must be made clear. It was a tragic incident where the minor intervened after witnessing his biological father assaulting his stepmother." According to the investigation, the teenager was preparing food when he heard cries for help.

The minor reportedly approached the altercation holding the knife he had been using to cook. When he attempted to separate his father from the woman, the intoxicated and aggressive father turned his violence toward the adolescent. "During the struggle, both fell, and the knife lodged in the father’s throat," López Salazar explained.

Initial confusion on social media and in some media outlets was resolved after ministerial investigations confirmed the minor’s account. Authorities emphasized that the teenager did not flee the scene, remaining with his father’s body and fully cooperating with law enforcement.

Minor Released After Investigation

The Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Adolescent Justice took over the case, determining that the minor acted in legitimate defense. "He was defending his stepmother and his own life," López Salazar reiterated. After reviewing legal and testimonial evidence, the adolescent was released and reunited with his family.

The stepmother, who had reportedly endured recurring domestic violence from the deceased, corroborated the minor’s account. She told authorities that prior incidents of abuse had already caused tension within the family.

The FGE’s findings conclude that no criminal charges will be filed against the minor, as his actions were deemed justified under the circumstances.
