Kantunilkín, Mexico — Two ferry companies have suspended service to Holbox Island due to dangerous weather conditions caused by an approaching cold front, with operations expected to resume Thursday evening.
The 9 Hermanos ferry company announced on social media that it has temporarily suspended all service for Thursday following orders from port authorities. The company said the last departures from both Holbox and Chiquilá ports would be at 10 a.m., with service resuming at 7 p.m. the same day.
“This measure aims to safeguard human life during this bad weather,” the company stated. “We recommend staying informed through our official social media channels.”
Separately, Holbox Express announced that its passenger ferry service would operate “only if navigation conditions permit.” The company said any suspension would be announced “in a timely manner.”
The service disruptions come after ports in Chiquilá and Holbox reopened Tuesday following closures caused by Cold Front 32. Weather forecasts indicate Cold Front 33 is expected to move into the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday, bringing another temperature drop to Quintana Roo that could last through the weekend.
