QUINTANA ROO, Mexico — A new presidential decree, signed by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and the Secretary of Finance, Édgar Amador Zamora, confirms an expanded year-end bonus of up to 40 days of salary for the 2025 fiscal year. This benefit, which is significantly higher than the 15-day minimum established by the Federal Labor Law for the private sector, is directed at a specific segment of the federal workforce.
The year-end bonus, known as "aguinaldo," is one of the most important labor benefits and an irrevocable right for all Mexican workers, including those employed in Quintana Roo. This annual gratuity aims to recognize the labor effort made throughout the year. It is essential for both employers and employees to know the legal deadline established by the Federal Labor Law, which requires the payment of the aguinaldo to be made before December 20 of each year. This means the last day to receive this benefit is December 19.
Who Receives the 40-Day Bonus in Quintana Roo?
Unlike private sector workers in Quintana Roo who receive 15 days, the 40-day aguinaldo will be granted to:
- Federal Public Servants: This includes personnel from the State Secretariats, their decentralized organs, and the Legal Counsel of the Executive Branch.
- Operational and Command Personnel: This covers base employees, trust employees, liaison staff, and command staff in federal dependencies and entities.
- Armed Forces: Active-duty military personnel and other members of the Army.
- Mexican Foreign Service: Both diplomats working in Mexico and those stationed in embassies and consulates.
- Personnel Paid by Honorariums: Those contracted by honorariums whose payment comes from the chapter of Personal Services (resources from the treasury).
- Pensioners and Retirees: This includes individuals with a civil, military, or grace pension, as well as veterans of the Revolution with a pension from the ISSSTE.
Which People Will Receive 15 Days of Salary in Quintana Roo for the 2025 Bonus?
The reason the rest of the workforce in Mexico and Quintana Roo will only receive 15 days lies in the Federal Labor Law, which applies to the private sector.
The law states: “Workers will have the right to an annual year-end bonus that must be paid before December 20, equivalent to at least fifteen days of salary.”
This makes it clear that 15 days is the minimum legal amount and the deadline to receive it is December 19. Although companies can choose to grant more, only the federal sector is guaranteed the 40-day amount by presidential order.
