Cancún — The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has announced that it will reinforce its preventive actions to avoid environmental crimes in coastal zones, including Quintana Roo. This initiative is in response to environmental scandals such as the Adamar case in Bahía Solimán, Tulum, among others.
Aiming to Anticipate Risks
The objective is not only to sanction after damage has occurred but to anticipate risks, emphasized Alberto Rojas Rueda, the Subattorney for Environmental Prevention, during the Jornada de Normas y Acreditación (Standards and Accreditation Conference) organized by Empresarios por Quintana Roo (Business Leaders for Quintana Roo).
Rojas Rueda indicated that one of the principal challenges is the lack of ecological land-use planning, as less than 10 percent of the country's municipalities have this instrument in place. He explained that if applied more broadly, more than half of the environmental crimes currently committed could be avoided.
Auditors to Accompany Construction Processes
The official insisted that the key is to implement strategies that allow for prevention, not just correction. To this end, he stated that the participation of auditors accredited by the Entidad Mexicana de Acreditación (EMA – Mexican Accreditation Body) and approved by Profepa will be fundamental. These auditors will be required to accompany construction processes to guarantee compliance with all permits and regulations.
In this manner, the agency seeks to strengthen the protection of the coastal environment and promote sustainable economic development in regions of high tourist and urban pressure like Quintana Roo.
