Mexico City — Omar García Harfuch, Mexico's Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, announced on Tuesday the arrest of Yair "N," the alleged leader of a criminal cell operating in the municipality of Villa de Álvarez, Colima. Six other individuals were detained alongside him.
In a statement issued through his social media accounts, the federal official detailed that the operation was carried out based on an exchange of information between Mexico's Security Cabinet and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. Yair "N" is accused of selling and trafficking fentanyl and methamphetamine.
During the investigation, authorities identified two residences in Villa de Álvarez that were being used as a clandestine laboratory and a warehouse for narcotics storage. More than 270 kilograms of fentanyl were seized from the properties, in both powder and pill form. Authorities stated this quantity is equivalent to approximately 14 million doses.
The seven individuals were placed at the disposal of the corresponding Public Prosecutor's Office, which will determine their legal status. The properties involved were sealed and placed under official custody.
This arrest follows an operation nine days prior in which more than a thousand fentanyl pills were seized in Culiacán, Sinaloa, after authorities located a stolen motorcycle near the Culiacán-Mazatlán highway. The Colima arrests also come months after the U.S. government called on Mexico to strengthen its fight against drug trafficking, specifically targeting fentanyl, through measures such as disrupting the illicit financing networks that enable organized crime.
