Farmers’ Group Protests Threatened Power Cuts in Tulum

Members of Antorcha Campesina protest outside Tulum's municipal palace

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Members of the farmers’ organization Antorcha Campesina protested outside Tulum’s municipal palace on Thursday, demanding authorities prevent threatened electricity cuts in irregular settlements that could affect approximately 1,500 families.

The demonstration, led by local representative Víctor Jiménez, drew about 20 people who gathered to express concern over potential power suspensions in various irregular zones within the municipality.

Protesters delivered a written request to the municipal president, calling for immediate intervention from the town council and the opening of dialogue with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

According to the group, around 1,500 families in the Macario community could be impacted if federal authorities extend electricity cuts to their area.

The document demands guaranteed access to electricity as a basic right and the establishment of direct communication channels with CFE to protect low-income families.

The protest proceeded peacefully, with organizers making clear they expect concrete solutions before any measures leave hundreds of households without power.
