Tulum, Quintana Roo — Following several days of demands made to municipal authorities, the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection of Tulum has covered the medical expenses and motorcycle repairs for a 16-year-old youth who reported being assaulted by police officers during a check at a security checkpoint installed on a public street.
The incident occurred in the middle of the month, when the minor was heading to his home and was stopped by municipal officers for an alleged routine inspection. According to his family's account, the officers used excessive force, which caused visible injuries to the teenager. After the event, the youth was taken to the Municipal Police base and later to a hospital to receive medical attention.
Authorities Acknowledge Damages and Cover Expenses
The family of the affected individual stated that from the first moment, they demanded that institutional responsibility be assumed. After several days of insistence, the department acknowledged the damages and covered the costs for medical consultations, medications, medical studies, and the repair of the vehicle, which was damaged during the detention.
Despite this, the family maintains its demand for justice and requests the opening of a formal investigation to clarify the actions of the officers involved.
"The case should not be closed only with an economic compensation; there must be consequences for those who abused their authority," they expressed.
Demand for Investigation and Review of Protocols
Residents of Tulum have expressed concern over the behavior of some police officers during checks on public streets. Other testimonies of alleged abuse have been shared on social media and in local media, which has generated questions about the protocols for police action and internal supervision within the police force.
To date, the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection of Tulum has not issued an official statement with the names of the officers allegedly implicated or regarding possible administrative sanctions.
The minor's family has stated that they will continue with legal procedures so that the case is thoroughly investigated and to prevent similar situations from recurring in the municipality.
