Cancún, Mexico — The Mexican Caribbean is poised to be one of the destinations with the highest expected tourist influx during the World Cup celebration, according to projections from Expedia Group, which anticipates a positive impact on the region due to the flow of international fans visiting North America.
What Is Expected for the Mexican Caribbean?
In this context, Carrie Wilder, senior director for Mexico at Expedia Group, explained that the Mexican Caribbean has high expectations of capturing a significant portion of fans seeking to attend major World Cup matches.
“So, we are seeing good numbers for the year for the Mexican Caribbean. What we have done, we built a landing page, special for Mexico for all the traffic of people looking for the matches, they can search for other destinations within Mexico,” Wilder said.
“And we believe that will give much visibility to other destinations and encourage people to say I stay longer and go to another destination.”
The Expedia executive added that the news that two national teams will hold their training camps in Cancún and the Riviera Maya reinforces the appeal for fans to decide to visit the Mexican Caribbean before or during the World Cup.
Why Does the World Cup Strengthen the Destination?
She considered, however, that the destination faces challenges in immigration and customs matters, as they are the most recurrent bottlenecks during tourist entry through the airport.
It is necessary, she said, to update existing infrastructure, train personnel, and improve baggage handling logistics to ensure it can meet the standards of a world-class event like the World Cup.
In a year-end review, the Expedia executive reported that despite all the year’s turbulence, the Mexican Caribbean reported growth of between 3% and 6%, which is very acceptable, taking into account the volume of tourists the destination attracts; she anticipated that growth will continue during 2026, but at moderate rates even despite the World Cup situation.
