Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — For the first time in the municipality’s history, the main field of the Unidad Deportiva Playa del Carmen (Poliforum) will feature high-quality synthetic turf, thanks to a historic investment by the Municipal Government led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado.

The comprehensive rehabilitation project addresses a long-standing demand from the local sports community, transforming an iconic space that has served as a gathering point for families, youth, and athletes for years. The project, funded with $23,996,699.17 pesos from the Fondo de Aportaciones para el Fortalecimiento de los Municipios (FORTAMUN), will directly benefit over 19,000 residents.

During the launch of the project, Mayor Estefanía Mercado, accompanied by Sports Director Alberto López, personally inspected the facilities and reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to prioritizing community needs.

“This sports complex is much more than just a collection of fields—it is a meeting place for our families, our youth, and those who see sports as a way of life, health, and community. We are investing in spaces that unite, transform, and allow us to live with dignity,” the mayor stated.

In addition to the synthetic turf on the main field, the project includes:

  • Rehabilitation of the skating rink with specialized Vesmaco-type paint
  • Replacement of synthetic turf on a secondary field
  • Construction of a metal dome with lighting
  • General painting of fields and common areas
  • Cleaning of absorption wells
  • Installation of new goals, fencing, and other sports equipment

This initiative falls under Axis 4 of the Municipal Development Plan: Urban Transformation, which prioritizes high-impact projects in strategic neighborhoods of Playa del Carmen, revitalizing public spaces for recreation, sports, and community building.

“Every peso invested in sports infrastructure is a bet on our present and future. Let’s continue working together, maintaining these spaces, and building a stronger, healthier, and more united Playa del Carmen,” Mercado concluded.
