Cozumel, Quintana Roo — An environmental protest at Playa Mia beach turned controversial after organizers left piles of garbage scattered at the entrance to the public beach.
The demonstration, organized to oppose Royal Caribbean’s proposed water park project, collected signatures demanding the cruise line’s permit be canceled. However, after the event concluded, glass bottles, cans, disposable cups, and plastic bags remained uncollected at the site.
Municipal workers did not clean the area until Monday, a day after the protest ended.
The incident has sparked criticism on social media and local news outlets, raising questions about responsibility. Critics are questioning whether organizers failed to ensure proper cleanup, attendees abandoned their waste, the contracted waste collection company did not fulfill its commitment, or municipal authorities should have managed the situation differently.
The situation highlights the tension between defending public spaces and maintaining environmental responsibility during public demonstrations.
