Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The environmental collective Cenotes Urbanos, in coordination with the Secretariat of Sustainable Environment, Climate Change, and Zofemat of Playa del Carmen, has carried out a cleanup of a cenote located in the area of the irregular settlement "In House." The objective of the initiative is to preserve this and other water bodies and make them accessible for the residents of the city.
During this operation, members of the collective and the Secretariat successfully removed a considerable amount of trash and other waste harmful to the ecosystem both inside and in the surroundings of this water body.
The use of a kayak was necessary to enter the deepest part of the cavern, where waste and items were removed from the bottom of the water by dragging them out with a hook.
At the conclusion of the intervention, the restoration and cleaning of the water body inside the cenote, its entrance, and the surrounding area were achieved.
The Secretariat of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change placed a pair of banners exhorting citizens to care for and protect these valuable water bodies, which are essential for the biodiversity and ecological balance of the region.
