Mayan Train Construction Concerns Addressed by Engineers

The construction of the Mayan Train, which began in March 2021, was initially lacking in detailed studies and proper planning due to the region's karstic soil type. This was especially true in the southern 5 section that links Playa del Carmen with Tulum. However, technical reviews are now being conducted at the project's most critical points to ensure its stability and structural security, according to Ítalo Béder Hernández Serrano, president of the Mexican Society of Structural Engineering (SMIE) in Quintana Roo.

Serrano noted that the project's rapid pace has led to some crucial technical aspects being overlooked from the start, despite their importance for a project of this scale. He expressed concerns that specialized studies in areas such as soil mechanics, ecology, and structural engineering were not performed during the initial stages. This has necessitated additional evaluations.

Serrano also noted that some studies have been completed, but expressed disappointment at the limited information available. He also voiced regret that this information has not been shared with local associations experienced in dealing with the region's predominant karstic soil. Furthermore, he pointed out that local engineering specialists were not involved in the initial planning, despite their crucial knowledge of the terrain. This lack of collaboration has raised questions within the local sector about the project's long-term viability and safety.

The SMIE hopes to collaborate on future federal projects, with the goal of contributing to a more robust and suitable infrastructure for the region. This would involve using specific foundation techniques adapted to the local soil, potentially avoiding legal and structural issues in the future.

The Mayan Train's 5th section has faced criticism and complaints related to legal and structural issues. Environmental groups and local communities have voiced concerns about the project's environmental impact and the lack of adequate consultation. Additionally, irregularities in the permit processes and the handling of resources allocated to the project have been highlighted, causing uncertainty about its execution and sustainability.
