Tulum Councilman Jailed Again in Homicide Case

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Eleazar Sagrero, an elected councilman and secretary general of the taxi union “Tiburones del Caribe,” was returned to prison today after a judge revoked his house arrest. He now faces criminal proceedings on charges of aggravated homicide and attempted homicide against four individuals. The judicial decision marks a new chapter in a case that has polarized the Tulum community and highlights the complex relationship between political power and social movements in the region.

Arrest and Reactions

Sagrero was initially detained on August 29, 2024, alongside Juan Manuel “N.,” as part of a court order that also led to the seizure of a .380-caliber firearm. His arrest prompted an immediate response from the taxi union, with nearly 300 vehicles blocking Tulum’s main entrance near the archaeological zone to demand his release.

Despite being elected as a councilman for the Labor Party, Sagrero was unable to assume office due to his detention and ongoing legal proceedings. His case remains under development, with upcoming hearings set to determine his legal future.

The State Attorney General’s Office confirmed the revocation of Sagrero’s house arrest, stating he will now remain in prison throughout the trial. The investigation remains open, and forthcoming hearings are expected to be decisive.

The case has not only strained local political relations but also stirred unrest within Tulum’s transportation sector, where Sagrero remains an influential figure due to his union leadership and political ambitions. His return to prison has reignited debates about the extent of his support network and the broader social implications of the case for regional stability.
