Cancún, Mexico — A man attempted to take his own life using a liquefied petroleum (LP) gas tank in downtown Cancún’s Supermanzana 20 neighborhood. Unconfirmed reports indicate the individual may have been a well-known local physician.
Emergency Response Deployed
The incident occurred on the evening of Monday, August 11, when emergency services received reports of a suicide attempt in the central area of Benito Juárez municipality. Firefighters and Civil Protection personnel responded to the scene, located near the Clínica de Ojos, an eye clinic owned by Dr. Joaquín Lozano Guasch.
Sources suggested the doctor himself was involved in the incident, allegedly under the influence of substances. Witnesses reported that the man had threatened to cause an explosion with the gas tank, prompting employees at the clinic and nearby residents to seek help.
Security Measures Enacted
Authorities cordoned off the area, including the intersections of Cobá, Xcaret, and Yaxchilán avenues, temporarily closing traffic near the El Ceviche roundabout as a precaution. Police, firefighters, and Civil Protection personnel secured the scene and eventually detained the individual, who was placed in custody pending further investigation.
Initial reports indicated the man might be referred to rehabilitation due to his alleged intoxicated state, though legal proceedings would determine any formal charges.
No Injuries or Damage Reported
Despite the alarming nature of the incident, no injuries or property damage were reported. Traffic in the area resumed normal operations after authorities cleared the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
