Elderly Man Kills Dog with Machete in Cancún

Cancún, Mexico — An elderly man was detained this Saturday for killing his dog with machete blows in the Region 237 area, an act that sparked outrage among neighbors and on social media.

The arrest was carried out by agents of the State Attorney General's Office, following a citizen's report that allowed authorities to locate the alleged perpetrator of the animal cruelty act, which occurred on Friday afternoon. According to authorities, the individual attacked his own pet, causing its death after several minutes of agony.

Neighbors in the region shared the case on social media, which accelerated the mobilization of activists and animal rescue groups, who demanded justice. A representative of the Cachorrilandia shelter reported that although citizens organized to rescue the aggressor's other pets, police agents arrived first and secured the man.

"We hope that there will now be consequences; the female dog suffered for more than 15 minutes without receiving help," the representative stated.

The head of the Secretariat of Ecology and Environment, Óscar Rebora, confirmed that the detention was possible thanks to the report disseminated on social media and emphasized that these cases are addressed in coordination with public security forces.

Three dogs were rescued from the residence and transferred to a temporary shelter, while the ministerial authority initiated an investigation to determine the aggressor's responsibility.
