The Ekinoxio Performing Arts Festival is back for its 11th edition in Playa del Carmen, coinciding with the spring equinox. This independent, self-organized festival offers a platform for a wide variety of artistic performances, including theater, dance, circus acts, and puppetry, across various alternative stages. Festival producers and artists recently held a press conference to share more details about the event.
In past years, the Ekinoxio Festival has successfully activated five venues and showcased over 15 professional companies. This year, the festival is branching out to unconventional spaces within Playa del Carmen and, for the first time, extending its reach to Tulum. This expansion allows the festival to involve more communities in the Riviera Maya.
This year’s festival dates and locations include:
- March 20th at Third Act, Nicte-Ha Colony
- March 21st at Public Market, Real Ibiza Colony, and Civil Sin and Zapatista Cafe, Gonzalo Guerrero Colony
- March 22nd at La Ceiba Park, Ejidal Colony
- March 23rd at La Eufemia Taqueria, Tulum.
Several companies, including Circonciente Mexico from Huatulco, Aquellas Theater from PDC, and Cía. Julissa in Yap from CDMX, will be participating. The festival will also host training workshops for children and performing artists, with a nominal recovery fee and limited occupancy.
The festival organizers have made sure that all events are free of charge, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the performances. Voluntary donations will be collected at the end of each show to support the participating companies.
Despite receiving no support from the current administration, the festival continues to thrive thanks to the generosity of patrons who provide transportation, accommodation, and meals for the artists.
