Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A dryer explosion near the Palladium Riviera Maya hotel left a female worker with burns on Monday, authorities said.
The incident occurred shortly before noon in a workers’ housing area located between Playa del Carmen and Akumal. Initial reports indicated a fire broke out in a thatched-roof laundry area, likely caused by a short circuit.
Security personnel at the site quickly contained the flames to prevent them from spreading to other parts of the complex. Firefighters then focused on ensuring the fire did not reignite, as the structure was made of grass and wood, posing a risk of spreading to nearby employee housing.
The injured woman, an employee of the resort, suffered superficial burns and was taken to a hospital for observation. She told authorities the dryer exploded “out of nowhere.”
Her injuries were not life-threatening, officials said.
