Cancún, Quintana Roo — A drunk driver crashed into a police patrol vehicle in Cancún on Thursday night and then physically assaulted officers before being subdued by additional police units.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Chacmool Avenue and Leona Vicario Avenue, where municipal traffic officers were directing traffic after a mattress fell from a private vehicle, blocking one lane. While officers coordinated to remove the obstruction and prevent further accidents, a car traveling through the area failed to slow down and collided with the patrol vehicle.
After the crash, the driver exited his vehicle visibly agitated and began physically assaulting one of the traffic officers. Witnesses reported the suspect threw punches directly at the officer, who attempted to control the situation.
In an effort to assist the officer, the driver of the vehicle affected by the fallen mattress intervened but was also struck by the alleged perpetrator, creating tense moments at the scene.
Additional police officers arrived minutes later and managed to subdue and detain the aggressor. The individual was seized and transported to municipal holding cells, where he was turned over to the appropriate authorities for legal proceedings.
Paramedics evaluated the assaulted officer and citizen, both of whom sustained minor injuries that did not require hospital transport. The involved patrol vehicle was towed to an impound lot as corresponding legal procedures began.
