Drones Patrol Felipe Carrillo Puerto Town Center as Violence Rises in Rural Communities

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities are deploying surveillance drones in the town center while violence escalates in rural communities that lack police protection, exposing gaps in local security strategy.

Mayor Maricarmen Hernández Solís promotes the drone program as part of a “prevention and rapid response” initiative, but the aircraft primarily monitor the municipal seat while criminal activity increases in outlying areas like El Señor, Tihosuco, Chunhuhub, and Nohbec.

The Public Security Department highlights drone flights over the town center, but residents in peripheral communities report the surveillance technology never reaches their areas. With only 176 police officers and 10 patrol vehicles covering the extensive municipality, rural communities remain vulnerable to illicit activities.

Critics argue the aerial surveillance serves as symbolic spectacle while ground-level security needs go unmet. “Security isn’t built with simulations but with real presence,” the article notes, pointing to the disconnect between technological displays and practical protection for citizens.
