MEXICO CITY — The dollar opened trading at 17.74 pesos per unit on Thursday, March 12, in the interbank exchange rate, representing a gain of 0.39%, according to Bloomberg data. The greenback has now risen for three consecutive days and remains near its highest levels so far this year.

The Mexican peso weakened in the previous session, after two days of gains, pressured by the strengthening dollar amid rising tensions in the Middle East. The market remains attentive to the potential impact of the conflict on global inflation, the effect on global economic growth, and the expectation that central banks will reconsider future decisions on interest rates.

On the international stage, the dollar has gained more than 1.5% against a basket of six currencies and is approaching its highest level since November.

The surge in energy prices—gas and oil—has increased demand for the dollar as a safe-haven asset. Furthermore, the currencies of energy-importing countries have registered greater losses against the dollar. Economists warn that a prolonged conflict could amplify the global economic impact. Analysts point out that the United States, being a net energy exporter, benefits in this high-price environment.
