Cancún, Mexico — Dr. Frank Mendiola, a respected and beloved physician in Cancún who treated more than 500 patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, has died. His passing was confirmed following weeks of declining health. Family, friends, and countless patients mourn the loss of the dedicated doctor.
A Lifesaver During the Pandemic
Dr. Mendiola was widely recognized for his tireless efforts during the public health crisis, often visiting the homes of infected individuals to provide care and diagnoses. His commitment to treating COVID-19 patients, despite personal risk, earned him deep admiration in the community.
Beyond his pandemic work, Mendiola held key public health roles, including serving as Director of Health for the Benito Juárez municipality and leading health services for the local DIF (Integrated Family Development System).
Health Struggles and Fundraising Efforts
In April, Mendiola suffered two near-fatal cardiac arrests due to life-threatening arrhythmias. Medical intervention saved him at the time, but he was later diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia, a congenital heart condition.
His only hope for recovery was an ablation procedure with electro-anatomical mapping and the implantation of an automatic defibrillator (ICD) to prevent further cardiac episodes. Family and friends organized fundraising campaigns and events to cover the costs of his treatment.
Final Surgery and Passing
On Sunday, June 1, Mendiola underwent a lengthy surgical procedure involving nine specialists. While supporters remained hopeful for his recovery, his condition proved too severe. His death was confirmed on the morning of Monday, June 2, 2025.
The community remembers Dr. Mendiola as a selfless professional who saved countless lives, particularly during one of Cancún’s most challenging periods.
