Cancún, Quintana Roo — A 59-year-old cyclist narrowly escaped death on Wednesday when a dump truck ran over him at a busy intersection, leaving him trapped beneath the vehicle with a possible leg fracture.
The accident occurred around 4 p.m. at the intersection of Rancho Viejo and Arco Vial Norte avenues, in front of a gas station. According to Municipal Traffic Department officials, the dump truck driver, identified as 71-year-old José, was traveling on Rancho Viejo Avenue when he turned right to enter the gas station, striking the cyclist who was traveling on Arco Vial.
The cyclist, identified only as Tomás, fell beneath the moving vehicle as the truck’s front left tire crushed the front part of his bicycle. Witnesses reported that the driver heard shouts from bystanders alerting him that he had hit a cyclist.
Tomás remained partially trapped by his bicycle frame under the truck, unable to move due to the suspected fracture in his right leg. Paramedics and firefighters worked to maneuver him free, eventually placing him on a stretcher for safe extraction.
He was transported to General Hospital for treatment. Traffic officials continued processing the incident and will turn the truck driver over to the State Prosecutor’s Office to determine responsibility for the cyclist’s injuries.
