Cancun, Quintana Roo — Customs officers at Cancun International Airport have seized cash in 14 different currencies worth more than 1.7 million Mexican pesos from a passenger on an international flight.
The National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM) said the seizure took place during inspections at Terminal 2, with support from National Guard officers, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection and other security agencies.
The cash, equivalent to 1,791,734 Mexican pesos, was discovered in a black backpack, according to the agency. It included 21,486 U.S. dollars, 155,160 Mexican pesos, 5,895 euros and 4,173 British pounds, as well as Brazilian reais, Bahamian dollars, Canadian dollars, Costa Rican colones, Belizean dollars, Barbadian dollars, Jamaican dollars, shillings, Polish zlotys and Russian rubles.
The passenger was detained and placed in the custody of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR) for legal proceedings under Mexican law.
