Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A tour guide has drawn criticism after using a bone tied to a pole to lure a crocodile out of the water for tourists at the Colombia lagoon in Punta Sur, a protected natural area on Cozumel’s southern tip.
Video and photos shared on social media show the guide baiting the reptile in view of visitors, prompting complaints that the stunt exploited the animal and put people at risk. According to a report from Noticaribe, the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation, which administers Punta Sur, has not publicly addressed the incident, and its biologists were reportedly unaware that guides were using such tactics to secure larger tips.
The lagoon sustains an estimated population of more than 200 crocodiles, and the animals are among the main attractions for tourists visiting the area.
