Animal Welfare Office in Crisis: Services Halted

Cancún — The Directorate of Animal Welfare is facing one of its worst crises since its creation, with offices closed, services suspended, and an absence of responsible personnel, leaving citizen complaints related to animal abuse and abandonment unattended.

Workers and volunteers reported that the facilities have been inactive for several days, with no administrative or operational staff. Residents who have attempted to file reports state they are unsuccessfully referred between different departments and that there is no official response.

Furthermore, an outbreak of canine distemper has been reported in the facility's shelter, affecting several animals and potentially representing a health risk due to a lack of control and cleaning. To date, no containment protocols or effective disinfection measures have been implemented.

Internal sources indicate that the space is operating irregularly under the management of independent rescuers and volunteers who, in the absence of supervision, are making decisions regarding the intake, adoption, or euthanasia of animals without official guidelines or documented veterinary follow-up.

Meanwhile, cases of animal cruelty and abandonment continue to go unaddressed, generating outrage among advocacy groups and citizens who are demanding transparency, sanitary control, and the immediate reopening of the Directorate of Animal Welfare with trained personnel and clear operational protocols.
