Cozumel, Mexico — To celebrate Mother’s Day, the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) invites the community to the inauguration of the exhibition “Somagrafías: Tótem Maternal del Movimiento y la Memoria” by artist Lía Viridiana Domínguez. The event will take place on Thursday, May 15 at 8:00 p.m. at the Island Museum, with free admission.
A Fusion of Visual and Performing Art
The exhibition presents an innovative proposal where visual and performing arts merge into a single execution. “Somagrafías” are plastic creations born from body movement, dance, tracing, and memory, making visible the link between the corporeal and the graphic, explained Isela Carrillo Cupul, director of the museum.
She added that the thematic axis revolves around the symbol of the mother as a life-giver, protector, fertile and cyclical figure, linked to the earth, the moon, and feminine deities from various cultures. Through acrylic drawings, intervened maps, and pieces of great symbolic strength, the artist invites reflection on motherhood as collective memory, origin, and transformation.
Breaking Conventional Boundaries
The exhibition will be mounted in a non-conventional format, with works in different formats and orientations, creating an immersive experience that breaks with the static vision of art. The general director of the FPMC, Juanita Alonso Marrufo, emphasized that the institution promotes diverse artistic expressions accessible to the entire community, attracting people of all ages to the museum.
“We want art to be a tool for personal and collective development, as promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa in the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo,” she stated.
The exhibition, dedicated to women in honor of Mother’s Day, will offer the public an opportunity to engage with this unique form of art.
