Cozumel, Mexico — The Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel (FPMC) will commence construction of its own administrative offices in 2026, marking a strategic shift to reduce rental expenses and allocate more resources toward community programs. The announcement was made by the foundation’s director, Juanita Alonso Marrufo.

Ending Decades of Leasing

Alonso explained that after more than 30 years of operating through leased spaces, the FPMC—originally established as the Chankanaab Board to protect the namesake lagoon and preserve Cozumel’s natural heritage—will finally have a dedicated headquarters. The move is expected to cut rental costs currently incurred for administrative offices.

While the exact location for the new building has yet to be finalized, Alonso confirmed that the selection process for a suitable plot of land will begin in 2026. Further details, including the investment amount and architectural plans, will be disclosed as the project progresses.

Prioritizing Park Maintenance and Upgrades

In the interim, the FPMC is focusing on improvements to its revenue-generating parks, including the Eco-Touristic Park of Punta Sur, Chankanaab Park, and the San Gervasio Tourist Stop.

Recent upgrades include the rehabilitation of the access road to Punta Sur, spanning 8 kilometers from the entrance to the lighthouse and onward to Chunchacaab Beach. The project, costing 2 million pesos, ensures smoother visitor access and enhances overall park maintenance.

At Chankanaab, the foundation has invested 1.3 million pesos in repairs to the main palapa, which had visible structural damage, as well as upgrades to interior restrooms, lagoon decks, and Mayan-style houses. Similar maintenance efforts are underway at the San Gervasio Tourist Stop.

Alonso emphasized that these parks remain the FPMC’s primary income sources, making their upkeep a top priority before addressing other facilities.

The FPMC’s long-term vision includes redirecting saved rental funds toward expanded community initiatives, reinforcing its commitment to Cozumel’s environmental and cultural preservation.
