Cozumel, Mexico — Cozumel is implementing a comprehensive strategy to improve its appeal as a Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town), combining public and private investment, digitalization of tourist payments, and urban modernization, according to Elías Farah Ceh, the Subdirector of Tourism.
Three-Pronged Approach to Development
The initiative focuses on three key areas: funding from the Fideicomiso de Cruceros (Cruise Trust), the DSA, and the municipal government’s own resources. Farah Ceh emphasized the need to enhance the town’s urban image, particularly in the city center, to meet federal guidelines while offering better attractions and activities for visitors.
Following the Second Session of the Pueblo Mágico Committee, officials identified several aspects requiring attention, including urban development, public services, and overall infrastructure. Coordination across all municipal departments is critical to address these needs and strengthen Cozumel’s identity as a Pueblo Mágico.
Digital Payments and Financial Education
One of the immediate benefits is the adoption of the "México Avanza" program, a collaboration between BBVA, Pueblos Mágicos, and Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR). The program digitizes payments for tourism service providers, replacing cash transactions and enabling access to credit for business growth.
Beyond streamlining transactions, the initiative includes financial education for participants and promotional exposure for Cozumel across BBVA branches and ATMs nationwide.
Boosting Tourism Through Modernization
The improvements aim to modernize services, enhance the town’s image, and increase promotional efforts to attract more visitors. Farah Ceh stressed that these measures will help secure additional funding for tourism marketing, further driving economic growth for the island.
The revitalization of Cozumel’s city center remains a priority, ensuring it serves as a welcoming gateway for tourists exploring the Pueblo Mágico.
