Cozumel, Mexico — The island of Cozumel is preparing for a surge in tourism activity as it anticipates the arrival of 20 cruise ships during Week 31 of the year, spanning from Monday, July 28, to Sunday, August 3. This represents a 28% increase compared to the previous week, signaling a significant boost for the local economy.
Economic Impact and Tourism Growth
Cozumel Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez emphasized that the influx of cruise ships strengthens the local economy and reinforces the island’s reputation as a reliable and competitive tourist destination.
“The arrival of more cruise ships to our island not only bolsters the local economy but also reaffirms the international tourism industry’s confidence in Cozumel as a safe, attractive, and competitive destination,” Chacón Méndez stated.
According to data from the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo), the 20 vessels will bring more than 78,000 tourists, generating an estimated economic impact of $7.1 million—equivalent to over $1 million per day.
In comparison, the week ending Sunday, July 27, concluded with 56,038 passengers distributed across 15 cruise ships.
Distribution Across Ports
The cruise ships will dock at Cozumel’s three international piers:
- Puerta Maya: Eight cruise ships carrying 30,102 visitors.
- SSA México: Six next-generation cruise ships with 24,892 passengers.
- Punta Langosta: Six cruise ships hosting 23,138 tourists, benefiting local businesses due to its proximity to the city center.
Peak Day and Daily Arrivals
Wednesday, July 30, will be the busiest day, with five cruise ships bringing 26,513 passengers—the highest single-day capacity for the week.

- Monday: 3 cruise ships – 13,623 passengers
- Tuesday: 5 cruise ships – 14,620 passengers
- Wednesday: 5 cruise ships – 26,513 passengers
- Thursday: 2 cruise ships – 8,846 passengers
- Friday: 2 cruise ships – 5,656 passengers
- Saturday: 3 cruise ships – 8,874 passengers
The increased cruise traffic underscores Cozumel’s prominence as a key destination in the Caribbean, further driving economic benefits for local businesses and the broader tourism sector.
