Cozumel, QRoo — Residents of the Independencia and Adolfo López Mateos neighborhoods have rejected the proposed donation of 35th Street between 11th and 13th Avenues, intended for the expansion of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).

The neighborhood consultation, held this Sunday at the Independencia sports unit, registered low participation, with only 525 people casting votes. Of the total, 278 voted against the proposal, 242 were in favor, and five ballots were declared null, tipping the result toward the rejection of the project.

Municipal President José Luis Chacón Méndez affirmed that his administration will respect the citizens' decision and thanked those who participated in the consultation. However, he announced that he will hold new meetings with Javier Naranjo García, the head of IMSS in Quintana Roo, to prevent the loss of resources allocated for the expansion project.

The proposed street donation was part of a project to improve health infrastructure in Cozumel and expand the capacity of the IMSS hospital on the island.
