Cozumel Removes 12 Tons of Sargassum from Beaches and Downtown Area

Workers from ZOFEMAT cleaning sargassum at Playa San Martin in Cozumel

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Authorities removed 12 tons of sargassum from beaches and downtown areas this week as part of ongoing coastal maintenance efforts.

Personnel from the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (ZOFEMAT) conducted cleanup operations at Playa San Martín, the eastern coast viewpoint, and downtown Cozumel, clearing the seaweed from a 1.3-kilometer stretch.

The work is part of a permanent coastal maintenance program aimed at preserving Cozumel’s image and ensuring a clean, safe environment for residents and visitors.

The collected material was transported to a bank in the southern zone where it will decompose naturally, avoiding negative impacts on the beaches.

According to official statistics, approximately 1,200 tons of the macroalgae were removed from various points around the island in 2025, reflecting the scale of the phenomenon and the need for constant containment work.

Municipal authorities stated that each cleanup represents a joint effort to address an environmental challenge affecting the entire Caribbean region. They emphasized that institutional collaboration is key to maintaining Cozumel’s tourist appeal and natural beauty.
