Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Alejandro Romero, known as Alex, a young Quintana Roo resident described as the support of his family, responsible and hardworking, recently had his life interrupted by an accident that led him to face medical negligence in the public health service.
His loved ones, in an attempt to rescue him, admitted him to a private hospital where the bill started running from the moment he touched the first tile. An emergency surgery and subsequent care raised costs until they became an unpayable debt.
His brother, David, launched a solidarity fundraiser called “Urgent Surgery Needed for Alex After Serious Accident” with the goal of reducing the economic burden, but has also been conducting a series of raffles in which his community in Cozumel has participated by donating the prizes.
The Accident and the Negligence
Alex suffered a serious accident when a food delivery driver on a motorcycle ran a stop sign and hit him. The impact caused a grade 2 fracture of the tibia and fibula, a very painful and delicate injury that requires immediate medical attention.
Grade 2 fractures, also known as type II open fractures, mean the bone has pierced the skin, creating a wound with significant risk of infection. This type of injury requires urgent surgical intervention to clean the wound and align the bones.
After the accident, Alex was admitted to a public IMSS hospital, where his family lived days of great anguish. According to his younger brother David, Alex went through an alarming situation of medical negligence.
He was not provided food or water, nor was he clearly explained the real severity of the injury, and they were not given a date for the surgical intervention he needed. Meanwhile, he continued to endure constant pain with the risk that his condition would worsen.
“Alex faces this moment with bravery, but it is not easy. He dreams of walking again without pain, of returning to his daily life, his work and his independence. Of feeling safe and at peace again,” his brother expressed.
In Mexico, on average over the last 20 years, 15,700 citizens have lost their lives each year as a result of injuries from traffic accidents. Additionally, in our country, seven out of every 10 fatalities on streets and highways correspond to vulnerable users: pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, according to the Aleatica Foundation for Road Safety.
According to INEGI, in 2021, 82,466 people were injured in traffic accidents, as happened with Alex.
A Family That Cannot Cover the Expenses
On January 22, he entered surgery and will remain under monitoring during his recovery, which will extend for several months. During that period, he will not be able to carry out his daily activities, which adds extra economic weight.
The solidarity fundraiser seeks to support him during that time. The goal was set at 150,000 pesos, an amount that will give Alex and his family some breathing room.
“As his younger brother, David, I raise my voice for him today. We created this campaign with humility and hope, asking for support so Alex can begin his recovery process. Every donation, regardless of the amount, is one more step toward returning his health, mobility and peace of mind,” David expressed through GoFundMe.

Kenddell: A Success Story That Inspires
In a similar story of solidarity, Kenddell Sansores, known in Playa del Carmen as “Kenddellicious” for his work animating pools and hotels with dance and water aerobics, turned to his community and was supported. For a year he faced long lines, paperwork and lack of responses at IMSS for a serious hip wear that prevented him from performing basic activities like bending over or tying his shoelaces.
He decided to turn to the private sector to pay for a prosthesis and surgery that exceeded 100,000 pesos, for which he launched the fundraiser “Prótesis en la cadera (Hip replacement).”
“I will never forget the support we received when my family lost a lot due to a fire in 2023, and now I feel that love again,” expressed a grateful Kenddell, who will soon be able to undergo the surgery that will restore his mobility.
