Cozumel, Mexico — The renovation of Cozumel International Airport, initially scheduled to begin in May, will now commence in August following adjustments to construction material costs. The project, which includes a new terminal building, operational area upgrades, and a dedicated public transportation zone, is expected to conclude by late 2027. The budget has increased from an initial 250 million pesos to approximately 268 million pesos.
Expansion to Nearly Double Passenger Capacity
The airport administrator confirmed that logistical challenges, including material costs and workforce coordination, caused the delay. Preliminary work has already started, with barriers installed around the future parking area for concession-based airport transportation. Material stockpiling is underway to ensure continuous progress in the coming months.
Upon completion, the renovated airport will feature a new arrivals terminal and an expanded waiting area, increasing annual passenger capacity from 711,000 to 1.2 million. Additional upgrades include two new aircraft parking positions, bringing the total to eight, and a designated public transportation zone. The existing parking lot will be reserved for private vehicles.
Modernization Efforts Extend to Aesthetic Upgrades
The renovation also encompasses aesthetic improvements, such as fresh paint and design updates to align the current terminal with the new building. The project aims to streamline passenger flow by clearly separating arrivals, waiting areas, and departures.
The delay underscores the complexities of large-scale infrastructure projects, but officials emphasize that the upgrades will significantly enhance the airport’s operational efficiency and passenger experience.
