Cozumel, Quintana Roo — As part of the commemoration of the 51st anniversary of Quintana Roo, the Cozumel Subdirectorate of Culture held an academic, artistic, dance, and cultural event to celebrate this important historical milestone.

Under the directive of Municipal President José Luis Chacón Méndez, the Subdirectorate of Culture carries out these actions with the objective of strengthening activities that promote healthy coexistence, social inclusion, the prevention of delinquency, and non-gender-based violence against women, thereby contributing to the construction of a national identity and a culture of peace through art and culture.

During her address, Cristina Santana, the Subdirector of Culture, stated, “Celebrating the history and identity of Quintana Roo is to celebrate the life and history of each one of us who live in this beautiful state. It is to celebrate its music, its dances, its cuisine, its crafts, and its rich and varied folklore. With this, we promote the cultural heritage and natural beauties of our magical town, but, above all, we celebrate its cheerful people, full of flavor, passion, and human warmth.”

At the emblematic Benito Juárez Park, locals, national tourists, and international tourists enjoyed an evening filled with music, color, and tradition, featuring the participation of the Corazón Caribe Musical Ensemble, the Cozumel Symphonic Band, and the dance groups from the Subdirectorate of Culture and partners of the IIDDMAC Quintana Roo.

The opening was led by the jazz workshop with the pieces “Bacalar” and “Suéñame Quintana Roo,” followed by folkloric presentations that showcased the cultural richness of the state, including dances of Maya Pax, dances from the south and the Caribbean, peninsular jaranas, and island trova.

The event culminated with the Caribbean dance workshop, which provided the grand finale with lively rhythms such as “Cumbia Cozumel” and “Esto es Cozumel,” in addition to a series of conferences held at the Island Museum.

Cristina Santana added that this event seeks to strengthen the identity and sense of belonging of Quintana Roo residents, highlighting their history, traditions, and customs. Furthermore, she acknowledged the support of institutions such as the Institute for Research and Diffusion of Mexican Dance, the Subdirectorate of Education, the Directorate of Tourism, Social Development and General Events, as well as the collaborators who, hand in hand with Municipal President José Luis Chacón Méndez, make possible the realization of activities that keep customs and traditions alive for the benefit of the community and for the delight of those who visit Cozumel.
